Snoop taught me to get high(er)

When Snoop Dogg talks, I listen, and you should too.

Even if you don't respect the player, you've got to respect his game.

And here's why: Snoop knows how to learn, to grow, to elevate, and to (yeah, I'm going to go there) get high.

A few weeks back, I watched this clip of Snoop giving A$AP Rocky advice about touring with Rihanna. He didn't talk about setlists, green rooms, or jet lag; he talked about her. He talked about how being in the orbit of someone as magnetic, as dialed-in, as next-level as Rhianna changes you, if you let it. Not because they demand more from you—but because you can’t help but rise to meet that energy.

That’s the power of proximity.

It hit me hard. Because yeah, I’ve felt that too.

In fact, it's something that I talked about this past weekend at my friend Mike Ganino's Make a Scene Masterclass.

Mike is one of my favorite people because he refuses to play small and, because of that, when I'm around him, I naturally play bigger, too. That's why, even though our businesses derive revenue from different actions, we are peers.

Also, Snoop is my peer. Robin Roberts is my peer. Dolly Parton is my peer. Rhianna is my peer. (And they can be yours, too, if you let them.)

Think about it for a minute. What if your peers weren't people who did the same work as you, but people who held the same standards as you?

Because the people who do the same work? Those people aren't your peers, they are your competition.

Comparing yourself to them just leaves you in that yucky comparison is the root of all sadness chasm.

But, those people who are best in class at whatever they do, regardless of whether it has anything to do with what you do? Now, that's a peer group I can get behind (even if they don't know I'm back there... said in, you know, not a stalker way, I promise).

This week, I want you to think about your true (and aspirational) peers, whether they know you exist of planet earth or not:

  • Who lives a life replete with the levels of excellence that you want to bring to everything you do?
  • Who manifests values in their life in a way that you want to manifest in your life?
  • Who brings out your best work, your boldest voice, your fullest self?
  • Who makes you better just by being in your head or your social feed?
  • And who’s just... along for the ride, or holding you back?

You don’t need more people in your corner. You need the right ones. The one thing I know to be true this week is that becoming your best you might feel like a solo act, but you’ll never stretch beyond the standards that define your circle.
