You’ll Never Outperform This One Thing

Last week, I was in London for the Thinkers50 Summit & Awards Gala—an event so full of smart, accomplished, world-changing humans that it made my brain hurt in the best possible way.

There were moments I stood in awe. There were moments I laughed so hard I cried. And there were moments—quiet, grounding moments—when I was reminded why I keep saying yes to rooms like that in the first place.

Because being around big thinkers? It changes you.
It expands you.
It demands more of you.
And if you’re lucky… it reminds you just how much more there is in you to give.

You’ve probably heard that quote from legendary basketball coach John Wooden:

“You will never outperform your inner circle.”

And damn if that isn’t true.
What the people around you normalize? Becomes normal for you.
What they believe is possible? Starts to feel possible for you, too.
What they dream about? Raises the ceiling on your own dreams.

Your people matter.
Not just for support or sanity or sweet travel selfies.
But for your trajectory.

So here’s my question for you: Who’s in your ear when it matters most?
Because if your inner circle is full of doubt, scarcity, fear, and playing small…You will absorb all of that.
And if your inner circle is bold, big-thinking, boundary-breaking builders of things that matter? You will become that too.

This is why I believe every inner circle should have three people:

  1. Someone to whom you aspire: Keeping an eye on someone who is kicking ass at a thing you want to do will provide you with a target to emulate and a bar to reach.
  2. Someone who is a peer: Having someone with whom you can celebrate or commiserate helps you keep moving forward, not feel alone, and provide a sanity check throughout.
  3. Someone you can mentor: There is no better way to finally get past impostor syndrome than to spend some time teaching someone something you really, really know.

Your growth isn’t a solo act.
Your success isn’t born in a vacuum.
So as we head into the end of the year, take a moment to ask: Who do I need to let closer? Who might I need to lovingly let go?

Because here's what I know to be true: The way the closest people to you behave — whether or not they are emotionally or physically close — influences the way you behave. What they do becomes what you do. What they think becomes what you think. What they normalize becomes what is normalized for you.

And here's another thing I know to be true: When you grow—when your life gets bigger—you are inevitably going to outgrow the people who liked you better when you were smaller. (Click here to watch my viral TikTok rant about this)
